Here are a few of the issues that factory farming directly affects.
It’s not only farm animals that pay the price for the horrors of factory farming: raising livestock also negatively affects the sustainability of feeding a growing population of humans.
As the human population grows, so will the demand for animal meat. This increased demand will put stress on the already taxed meat supply chain, making fresh water and fertile land increasingly scarce.
Ironically, livestock consume more protein than they produce. This means that food that could otherwise be used for human nutrition is instead being shunted to feed livestock.
To put it bluntly, our planet is unable to sustain factory farming. Animal agriculture is a leading cause of:
- Climate change.
- Habitat destruction.
- The exploitation of fisheries, forests and other resources.
But don’t take our word for it: the research is overwhelming. Animal agriculture is the largest source of water pollution, accounts for 30% of the total land use, and is responsible for 18% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions (which is a share higher than transport).
The practice of mass meat production involves routine administration of antibiotics to factory farmed animals. In the United States, ~80% of all antibiotics produced are used in animal agriculture, making animal agriculture a major contributor of antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Not only is consumption of residual antibiotics found in meat bad for our pets, the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria is an urgent public health crisis that impacts people on a global scale.
